The PINES Study

Taking part in the PINES study

A research study on the biology of depression, stress, and suicide.

Not yet enrolling
Check back in January 2027.

Under construction A fuller description of the study is on its way. In the meantime, here is what we can say.

Who may be eligible

The study is open to adults between 20 and 40 years old who have had thoughts of suicide in the past month and who are currently in outpatient mental health care. Full criteria are reviewed during screening, and some of them are not listed here.

What taking part involves

1First two months

Short surveys, twice a day

A few minutes each time, plus simple at-home testing. Study staff stay in regular contact.

2If you continue

Study visits and MRI

Some participants go on to a second part that includes study medication, placebo, and MRI scans.

3Afterward

Check-ins

The team follows up at two, four, and six months to see how you are doing.

Your own care continues

Taking part does not replace your treatment. You stay with your own providers throughout, and the study team is not your treatment team.

Participation is voluntary. You can stop at any time, for any reason, without affecting your care.
